First Grade Newsletter

Happy (almost) spring, everyone!

First grade has been very busy lately and has done some very impressive things!  In phonics and reading, we have moved beyond short vowels and have mastered the silent “magic e” that makes the other vowel in the word long.  Since we learned that concept so well, we were able to move onto other ways that vowels can be long!  Go ahead and ask us what happens “when two vowels go walking,” we’ll be happy to tell you! Our reading stories have been getting much longer, and we are able to read independently without getting stuck on words with long vowels!

The 100th day of school came at the perfect time since we were learning about place value and how to navigate the 100 chart!  We brought in groups of 100 items from home and used them in our place value lessons; it was a lot of fun!  Next, we are moving onto money, which will certainly help us figure out what we can buy when we go to the school store!

One of our favorite projects this year was making peanut butter!  We were learning about where food comes from and food processing.  During Black History Month, we learned about George Washington Carver, who did all sorts of cool things with peanuts including making peanut butter yummier.  So, to combine the two, Miss Kearney and Mrs. Sengstock put their heads together and decided it would be really cool if we made our own peanut butter!  The process was really fun and it sure tasted good!

Overall, we are learning a lot and having a lot of fun while doing it.  We are so excited to see what the rest of the year holds!

Sincerely,
Ms. Kelly Kearney
