The city of Meriden was once a part of the town of Wallingford.  In 1806 it became the town of Meriden.  In 1867, Meriden was declared a city.

Jonathan Gilbert was given land by the Connecticut Colony to build a farm.  He named it "Merridan".  Some people believe that may have been how Meriden got its name.

The first mayor of Meriden was Charles Parker.
Broad Street is the oldest street in Meriden.  It used to be called Market Street.
The second oldest street in Meriden is Colony Street.

The city of Meriden became famous for silver, ivory combs, clocks and cutlery.  Samuel Yale had his pewter button shop on Broad Street in Meriden in 1794.  Meriden earned the title
"Silver City of the World".

Today, Meriden is still a center for manufacturing.
One famous company in Meriden is the Thompson Candy Company, established in 1879.  Meriden has a large shopping mall called the The Westfield Shoppingtown Meriden Square.

Player Pianos were invented and manufactured by the Wilcox White Manufacturing Company in Meriden.

The Charles Parker Company of Meriden was the first to invent and manufacture the coffee grinder.

At the corner of Broad Street and East Main Street, there used to be an old tavern. Travelers going from Hartford to New Haven would stop for food and beverage at the Old Stage Coach Tavern.  A small monument marks the spot where the tavern used to be.

Meriden is located at the center of the state of Connecticut between New Haven and Hartford.  It is located near Interstates 91, 84 and I-691.  Meriden is a very diverse community.  People of all races, religions, and nationalties live in Meriden.

The hills surrounding Meriden are extinct volcanoes.

Meriden is famous for Hubbard Park.
17.8% of the city is made up of park land.
There are 577,315 daffodils at the park during the
Daffodil Festival.

Meriden was named the "Nation's Ideal War Community" by MGM Studios and the U.S. War Manpower Commission during World War II when a movie was made.
